If you are black, Hispanic, disabled, the first to go to college in your family, have financial need, or are going into a STEM (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) or teaching field and you have not applied for a scholarship, you are really missing out! There are loads of scholarships out there, especially for students who meet any of these qualifications. And even if you're like me and don't qualify for most scholarships, there are still plenty of opportunities for you, too! Scholarships are everywhere for everything, from left handedness to asthma. Unfortunately, most students don't know about all the opportunities available, so they can't take advantage of them. The only way you can lose out is if you don't apply!

My personal recommendation is to also check directly with the school you're attending. They always have a whole page filled with scholarships just for their school, both merit and financial need based, buried in their websites somewhere. You just have to hunt for them! Those scholarships are actually some of the best, because you're only competing with students applying for that specific school, instead of the whole nation. (Competing with the whole nation is the reason I don't tend to recommend scholarship search engines, like Fastweb, although I have had success with it on occasion in the past and included a link.)
Don't forget - scholarships aren't the only way to save money on your education. Another great way is simply to lower the starting cost by going to a school which is in-state (so you only have to pay in-state tuition) and is a state school. The value of scholarships that they give you may not be as much, but the price tag is actually already subsidized by the government, so it often costs less overall. So look at the overall price tag rather than getting dazzled by the dollars they're giving you.

This is a basic list of scholarships meant to help the average student earn a basic scholarship. However, sometimes students face handicaps when applying to scholarships. Maybe you don't have provable financial need, you don't qualify for a diversity scholarship, or you're really bad at writing essays. For advice on how to deal with these, check out the Overcoming Obstacles page.
